Samsung Readying Galaxy Grand Max

A lot of factors have been offered as to why Samsung has struggled this year and the company is in the midst of solving many of them. However, the Korean giant does not seem to be solving one of the more common complaints, that Samsung simply has too many devices. We continue to hear about an almost endless stream of new handsets that will land in the coming months, and we have a new one today in the form of the Galaxy Grand Max.

This handset will be a backward step for Samsung if its details are true. Samsung is moving into a new smartphone strategy with metal premium designs, but the Galaxy Grand Max will reportedly go back to Samsung’s oft criticized plastic body. It’s not particularly big either even though it is called the Max; it gets a 5.2-inch 720p HD screen, a 1.2GHz unspecified quad-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of on board storage and a micro SD card slot. This seems very much like the kind of device Samsung is trying to move away from.

Android M to be built into Cars

Android
Android
Wait a minute, hasn’t Android Lollipop only just been released, as in one month ago? You know how the mobile world moves, always moving and always looking to the next thing, which is why there is little surprise that we are already getting our first rumor regarding Android M (Android M&M anyone?). It may seem silly, but thinking about it logically, Android 4.4 KitKat launched in November 2013 and six months later at its I/O event Google announced Lollipop.

So, this rumor then. It seems that Google wants to take its Android platform one step further and actually have it integrated into cars. Android Auto is the first step towards that, the software launches next year and let you hook up your smartphone or tablet to a built in screen in a car. Android M (Mars Bar?) will go one step further and will actually be able to be placed within the dashboard of the car, essentially controlling all the software in the vehicle. This process will mean there will be no need for a smartphone or tablet pairing. Reuters is reporting that the digital car engine will be built into Android M (Meat Loaf?) and will become a full operating system for cars, as well as mobile devices. Of course Apple has its own similar plans in this regard with its CarPlay technology. Google already has deals with General Motors, Nissan, and Hyundai, but Apple has more manufacturers on its side. A major hurdle will be how to make Android start quickly when the car ignition is activated.

Blackberry Classic Launches, Available on Amazon before Christmas

Classic
Classic

Blackberry has announced its latest smartphone today, the Blackberry Classic, a handset we all knew was coming and what it would be. The device is based off the company’s ahem, classic designs such as the Bold and it comes with old school charm and up to date software, features, and security.

You may be eyeing this as a nice Christmas gift for yourself, but the device has run out of its initial pre-order run on Blackberry.com so if you want one you will have to wait until December 31st. If you want your Classic quicker though, there are options. For example, Amazon still has the device in stock and is shipping it before Christmas. The online retailer is selling the device unlocked in the United States for $449. As for the handset, it comes with the familiar Blackberry full QWERTY keyboard and a trackpad, like the good old days when smartphones were business tools and not tech toys. It comes with a 720 x 720 3.5-inch screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, and 8 megapixel rear camera, a 2MP front facer, and 16GB of expandable storage. It is a spiritual successor to the Bold 9900 and runs the latest BB 10.3.1 software. Both Verizon and AT&T (the two biggest carriers in the US) will offer the Blackberry Classic, but not until next year and neither network has offered pricing details yet.

Samsung Falls, Apple, Xiaomi, and Android Surge Says Gartner

Samsung

The popularity of smartphones shows no sign of slowing down around the world as 20% more handsets were sold through the last quarter compared to the previous period. The data (and a lot more besides) was compiled by reputed market researchers Gartner. The company found that 310 million smartphones have been shipped during the last three month period, while feature phones continue to tumble to obscurity thanks to more availability of budget smartphones.

Smartphones now take 66% of the market through the third quarter of 2014 and the feature phone market has decreased to 34%, but by 2018 Gartner predicts that only 10% of the market will be made up of feature devices. It comes as no surprise to see that Android dominated smartphone sales through the period, taking 83.1% of all sales which means 250 million Android handsets were sold. The platform has grown (despite its main player Samsung struggling) from the same period last year, when the OS accounted for 205 million units.

Apple’s iOS also grew to 12.7% of the market with 38.1 million iPhones sold, not bad at all considering the company has a vastly lower portfolio than Android. The big platform loser is Windows Phone; Microsoft’s operating system has moved more devices through Q3, but market share actually fell from 3.6% in 2013 to 3% this year. Samsung continues to be the leading smartphone vendor, but the Korean company’s problems in 2014 are continuing.
During the third quarter of 2013 the company held 25.7% of the market with 117 million smartphones sold, but this year Samsung now occupies 20.6% of the market, while sales slipped to 94 million units. Another loser was Nokia (or Microsoft as it is now), shedding 20 million units with 43 million smartphones sold over the last quarter, a big drop from 63 million through the same period in 2013. It is common knowledge that Chinese company Xiaomi has enjoyed growth this year and that is reflected in Gartner’s research.
The company increased its sales (mostly at the expense of Samsung) by a massive 336% and moved 15.7 million smartphones in the period. Apple also boosted its sales, with 38 million iPhones sold; a significant climb over the 30.3 million solid during the third quarter of 2013. The research shows there are plenty of companies vying for position of third biggest vendor behind Samsung and Apple. Chinese companies Huawei, Lenovo/Motorola, and Xiaomi are all staking a claim, while even LG is hanging around.

Game of Thrones Games Lands on Android

Telltale
Telltale

When the Game of Thrones game from Telltale landed on iOS last week it reminded us that Apple’s platform still gets some big titles before Android. Luckily, we have not had to wait too long as those using Google’s operating system will be able to clash swords on Game of Thrones soon as the app is now available for your downloading pleasure on Google Play.

The game based off the books (and TV show) created by George R. R. Martin and HBO has been created by Telltale games. Telltale has a reputation for making excellent adaptations of famous titles, doing stellar work with such classics as the Walking Dead and Jurassic Park. The games are typically heavily story based and offer a new story to the canon, while admittedly gameplay is at a minimum and reserved to swipes and puzzles, the games are usually absorbing. The company usually waits months to port its games to Android, but this time is seems the developer has planned ahead as the Game of Thrones is landing in Google’s app shop quickly. Although the company never officially announced that this game/story would ever make its way to Android, we just sort of assumed it would. The game is as much interactive episode as it is full on gaming adventure. You play as five characters for the GOT universe and your actions and choices can lead to multiple scenarios within the story and outcome of the game. The game is priced the same as other Telltale titles on Android, meaning you can get the first episode and any subsequent ones for $4.99, or you buy all episodes (some still unreleased) for $19.99.

Samsung’s New Galaxy E Budget Series

Samsung
Samsung

We know full well that Samsung is not averse to releasing a new smartphone series and the company will continue with another new line imminent. So much for the company changing its strategy for a less is more policy in the wake of declining profits. The company has released the Galaxy Alpha, the Note 4, and the A Series recently, but a new range is on the way with the model numbers SM-E700 and SM-E500.

Going on Samsung’s previous model numbers, we deduce that the handsets will be called the Galaxy E5 and the Galaxy E7, but we won’t bet the bank on that. As you would expect, there are already some spec rumors surrounding these handsets and it seems they will be Samsung’s new budget to mid-range level devices. The Galaxy E7 will reportedly have a 5.5-inch 720p resolution screen and an unnamed processor clocked at 1.5GHz. The Galaxy E5 will be smaller at 5-inches and is likely to rock a less powerful 1.2GHz chipset. There is no word on when these devices will be ready, but I am assuming an early 2015 launch and roll out, and it will be interesting to see how Samsung handles the design. It would be good to see the metal and premium design of the A series here, but at lower prices that seems more unlikely. What do you think, is Samsung going down the same old paths, or could the Galaxy E series continue to point to a new direction?
